HON 330: Off-Campus Study Project

About this Course

Honors students taking advantage of an off-campus opportunity, like study abroad, an internship, or a summer research experience, may opt to take HON 330: Off-Campus Study Project.

In HON 330, students design and complete an independent academic off-campus project. HON 330 allows students to reflect upon, synthesize, and share their off campus experience in a scholarly and academic context.

Because each experience will be unique, students must first complete an acceptable proposal which describes the purpose of the off-campus project and plans for appropriate and sufficient work.

Honors faculty, as well as faculty you may consult while studying off-campus, will assist with suggesting appropriate project ideas and timeline.

Getting Started

Students must get instructor approval to take HON 330. Approval is based on timely submission of a cogent and well-defined project proposal. The proposal must clearly explain the student's independent study project and how it will be completed during their off-campus experience.

To begin the process of developing and writing your proposal, start by reading the Handbook for taking HON 330: Off-Campus Study Project

Next, schedule an advising appointment to discuss your goals and interest in HON 330. We recommend scheduling an advising appointment early in your planning process.

HON 330 Proposal

Students taking HON 330 must have a project proposal approved by Honors faculty before they can register for the course.

The proposal must be at least 6 pages (double-spaced, 12-point type), and must answer all four of these  questions:

  1. What is your proposed experience?

The activity or experience will be different depending on the student. It could be a semester- or summer-long program in a place you have always wanted to visit. It could be an internship in preparation for a career you're considering.

  1. What are the goals or your experience, or the topics you want to learn more about?

What do you hope to do more concretely during this opportunity? For example, you can conduct a site-specific research project, investigate a local cultural event, or conduct a comparison between the US/Hawaii/your hometown and your host destination.

  1. What will you submit as your final project work?

Different experiences may be suited for different formats for your final project. In your proposal, describe the format of your final project. Explain why this format is appropriate for your project. If it is a creative format, such as a film or performance, provide information as to how you developed the technical skills to make this an appropriate format.

  1. How will this experience benefit you as a student at UHM?

Please explain why this study away or off-campus experience will benefit you specifically. You can explain how it relates to your program of study in your major, minor, or certificate program. You can discuss how it will help you fulfill your professional or personal goals.

Optional: Funding your project. Your project may be eligible for grant funding! Be sure to consider UROP as a funding source. Go here for more information: https://manoa.hawaii.edu/undergrad/urop/

Next Steps

Once you have completed your proposal, email to the Honors faculty member you are working with for their review and approval. If your project is approved, you will be given a registration override to sign up for HON 330.
