I decided to become a UNIV110 Peer Mentor to help first year students who may have had similar struggles with their transitions into college, and to help build a community and safe space that allows first years to smoothly transition into the college experience while putting themselves out there for more outreach and opportunities both on and off campus.

I became a UNIV 110 Peer Mentor because I have a strong passion for helping others succeed. As a two-time transfer student myself, I understand the challenges of transitioning to a new college and want to ensure others don't feel alone in this process.

I have always had a passion for teaching and public speaking has always been a strong suit of mine. I have also seen major issues happen with first-year students having a poor first year, and it would mean so much to me if I could change that for as many students as possible.

I wanted to become a UNIV 110 peer mentor because freshman year is full of change and challenges. I wanted to offer my mentorship to help as many freshman as possible feel comfortable during this period of change, and learn how to overcome it.

I became a peer mentor because I regret not taking the course as a freshman. Being a mentor allows me to assist students in succeeding during their college years. I want to be there for them during the difficult transition from high school to college. I aim to provide both support and friendship as they adapt to their new environment. This experience will also help me develop into a confident and independent leader. I am thrilled and grateful to volunteer as a peer mentor.

I was able to take UNIV 110 as a freshman, and appreciated the connections it built for me. I wanted the opportunity to be someone who helps guide my fellow students through the transition into the first year of college.

Originally, it was a plan to just leave the country where I was living at the moment (Egypt) because it was not safe for women. While it wasn't a choice of a specific university at first, I grew to love UH a lot and decided to stay instead of transferring elsewhere. I found that even though UHM did not have my preferred major (Neuroscience) as an undergraduate degree, there were enough classes and labs for me to receive the same amount of knowledge. While I came to UHM a bit on a whim, I stayed knowing that this is a place I want to receive my education from.

I wanted to provide support for the entering class and transfer students. I feel like having a dependable peer who can answer any concerns, give clarification, and provide overall support is a great role.

As a transfer student and first-generation university student, I received support in both academics and lifestyle adjustments, inspiring me to pay it forward. My experience as a Peer Mentor for local youth in my hometown also motivated me to work with First-Year Programs. This role will provide valuable learning opportunities to apply back home in Palau, enhancing my skills and knowledge to better serve my community's youth.
