KINEYA Sakio

Bryson Teruo Goda, is a fourth-generation Japanese American, born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. At the young age of 6, Bryson began his intense training in nagauta shamisen from Kineya Satoshi in Honolulu. At the age of 15, Bryson began training in Tokyo under the seventh-generation nagauta Samoan-kai headmaster, Kineya Sakichi, and was granted the professional name (natori) of Kineya Sakio three years later.

Between 2009-2019, Bryson performed numerous nagauta pieces at concerts in his native Honolulu and in Tokyo. In 2019, he was granted the status of Master Nagauta Instructor (shihan) by the headmaster, Sakichi VII.

He has also been involved in previous English Kabuki productions at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, as a nagauta ensemble member for Nozaki Village (2004) and as lead shamisen for The Vengeful Sword (2013).
