At UH, several Filipino student groups interact with the Center for Philippine Studies in one way or another. At Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures (IPLL), two stand out: Katipunan and Timpuyog. There is also a group of Filipino law students.

Katipunan

Katipunan is a student organization associated with the Filipino program. In Tagalog language,  Katipunan means “group” or “organization.” It also refers to the revolutionary organization during the Spanish colonial period.

Timpuyog

Timpuyog  (“togetherness”) is the organization of students enrolled in various courses offered by the Ilokano Language and Literature Program   (ILLP) at UH Mānoa. These courses cover up to 400-level of Ilokano language, on Philippine critical discourses, on popular culture, on Philippine cinema, and on the translation and interpretation studies in Ilokano.

It aims to bring together these students in various courses in an effort to equip them with linguistic and cultural competencies, and to make them aware of the importance of the Ilokano language in the State of Hawaiʻi and the history of Philippine diaspora in particular, with Ilokano itself as historically the language of Filipino diaspora in the United States of America.

Filipino Law Students

The third group consists of the Filipino Law Students Association, or FLSA, dedicated to strengthening the Filipino community through Filipino scholarship and leadership in Hawai’i’s legal community. FLSA also aims to raise awareness about important contemporary issues facing Filipinos, especially Filipino women, as an oppressed class of Hawai’i society, mindful that these issues are related to struggles in the Philippines and in the Native Hawaiian community.

FLSA works closely with Hawai‘i Filipino Lawyers Association (HFLA) to provide networking opportunities for FLSA members. Each year FLSA offers two (2) $500 Scholarship Awards to members. Membership is multiethnic and scholarship opportunities are free and open to all law school students.
