Media Advisory: "Drag Brunch" event at UH law school will support safe spaces for LGBTQ+

A student association that represents and advocates for the LGBTQ+ community is reaching out to the larger community this weekend by hosting a "Drag Brunch" from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in the courtyard of the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

The Lambda Law Student Association is dedicated to creating safe spaces for members of the community both on and off campus.

“Our aim is to help foster community by inviting those LGBTQ+ individuals who would never have a chance to be on a law school campus to see that Richardson is a supportive environment,” said Ian F. Tapu, president of the group. “The goal of the 'Drag Brunch' is to help bring more queer visibility on campus and to start the larger conversation about the importance and need to have safe spaces."

Lambda is also particularly interested in bringing awareness about the number of LGBTQ+ in the criminal justice system.

“LGBTQ+ people are disproportionally represented in the criminal justice system,” said Tapu. “We hope that events like these can address that issue and inspire more LGBTQ+ people to see the law as a possible career path.”
