Over the past five years approximately between 80 and 100 newly diagnosed cases of HIV have been reported annually in Hawaiʻi. On World AIDS Day, December 1, the Hawai’i Center for AIDS at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) will host the 2016 Update: Hawai’i to Zero conference, which will detail how the state might realize a Hawaiʻi to Zero goal.

Researchers at JABSOM and community partners will lead discussions on the latest research in HIV prevention.  The public is invited to Thursday's free event, with speakers scheduled from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the Sullivan Conference Center on the campus of JABSOM and the UH Cancer Center.

Speakers include a 10 a.m. keynote by Dr. Julie Dombrowski of the University of Washington, and a presentation by Dr. Cecilia Shikuma, Director of the Hawaiʻi Center for AIDS.  Also speaking will be Dr. Lishomwa Ndhlovu, who was awarded top-tier funding from the National Institutes of Health this year to test his "shock-and-kill" strategy to eliminate HIV in the body.
