Loos, a graduate student in the Department of Meteorology at UH Mānoa, earned the national honor based on her Co-op work contributions, academic achievements and service to the university and community.
Highlights of her Co-op with the NWS-HFO include compiling forecast statistics, mapping forecast zones, preparing broadcast information and supplying critical data for a publication used by federal, state, county and city government agencies. Loos served as a key presenter in a diversity grant-funded program, the Integrated Mentoring for Unlimited Achievement (IMUA) Career Day, sponsored by the Student Employment and Cooperative Education office. Her presentation on meteorology careers to high school girls was aimed to promote more interest amongst girls in science, math, engineering, and technology.
Loos maintains a 3.78 cumulative grade point average while working concurrently as a graduate research assistant for the Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research along with her Co-op as a meteorologist trainee with the NWS-HFO.
Co-op is a nationwide, career-based, work experience program. Through the UH Mānoa Co-op program, students develop an awareness of and explore careers through paid work with community employers who seek to recruit talented, trainable prospective employees.
