University of Hawaiʻi Chief Information Officer David Lassner has been elected to chair the Internet2 Applications Strategy Council and serve on the Board of Trustees of Internet2.

Internet2 is a consortium being led by 206 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow‘s Internet. Internet2 is recreating the partnership among academia, industry and government that fostered today‘s Internet in its infancy.

One of Internet2‘s major activities has been the creation of a national research and education network that links the nation‘s research universities and others with advanced capabilities and high bandwidth to support research and development that is not feasible over the commercial Internet today. Internet2 also has partnerships with more than 40 international research and education networks and related organizations. The University of Hawaiʻi was one of the early members of Internet2 and currently operates an OC3 (155 Mbps) link to the Internet2 hub in Seattle.

As the university‘s chief information officer, Lassner has been responsible for designing, implementing and directing a new integrated organization to support computing infrastructure, management information systems, distributed learning technologies and voice, data and video telecommunications.

Lassner is also a member of the university‘s Cooperating Graduate Faculty and has taught, both in-person and online, in UH Mānoa‘s Department of Information & Computer Science, College of Business Administration, School of Communication and College of Education. He has been with the University of Hawaiʻi since 1977.
