A longtime Hawaiʻi physician and member of the University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center was recognized recently by one of the largest physician organizations in the state for his commitment to scientific research and medicine. Dr. Jeffrey Berenberg, MD, FACP, an oncologist and professor in the Clinical and Translational Research Program, has won the American College of Physicians’ Laureate Award.

The award is conferred by local chapters of the organization, and goes to a physician with a long history of excellence in serving the community. The physician must be a respected practitioner of internal medicine care and a contributor to medical education.

Said Dr. Mary Ann Antonelli, MD, the governor of the ACP Hawaiʻi Chapter, “Berenberg doesn’t rest until he gets answers about clinical problems. He goes out of his way for patient care no matter who the patient is.”

Dr. Berenberg began working on clinical trials and data management at the UH Cancer Center more than 35 years ago. He is the co-principal investigator on the $3.8 million NCI Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) grant in Hawaiʻi, which is part of a national effort to increase access to federal government cancer research for minority, rural and underserved patient populations.

He has practiced medicine in Hawaiʻi since 1983. He served as Chief of Hematology and Oncology at Tripler Army Medical Center from 1983 through 2010, and is still a full-time physician there.

“I am honored to get the award. I’ve had a lot of satisfaction seeing the improvement of cancer care through clinical trials and taking care of patients with cancer and blood disease,” he said.

The University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center is one of 68 research institutions designated by the National Cancer Institute.  Affiliated with the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, the center is dedicated to eliminating cancer through research, education, and improved patient care.
