AT&T - UH Hackathon set for this weekend

What:    AT&T – UH Mobile App Hackathon Hawai’i

Who:     UH students, technical and non-technical participants

When:   Begins Friday, February 13 at 6pm

             Ends Saturday, February 14 at 6pm 

Where:   ‘Iolani School’s Sullivan Center

The AT&T-University of Hawai’i Mobile App Hackathon is a 24-hour competition where participants build their own mobile apps while learning about the latest cutting edge tools. 

University of Hawai’i students from across the system and other community participants will have the opportunity to work together to build mobile apps from conception to implementation.  Students will also design business plans for their apps, strategizing how their products will make money and be maintained.

Competing teams have a chance to win $5,000 in gift card prizes provided by AT&T.  The mobile apps will be judged on originality, function, performance and the teams’ ability to articulate what their app does.

Former UH engineering student Governor David Ige will serve on the judge’s panel.  Ige earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and a master of business administration degree in decisions sciences from UH Mānoa.

On Friday, February 13, participants will network, pitch ideas, form teams and start working to complete their mobile app.

On Saturday, February 14, teams continue their work to complete their mobile app.

The AT&T-UH Hackathon began about two years ago when AT&T, UH Foundation, UH’s Information Technology Services (ITS) and UH Mānoa met to discuss bringing the event to Honolulu.  Last year’s inaugural Honolulu Hackathon was sponsored by AT&T with a donation made through the UH Foundation.  UH Mānoa hosted and ITS coordinated the event for UH students.

This year, the hackathon has grown and is open to UH students as well as the community.
