College of Education Professor to serve on Board of Education

On July 15, 2013, University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM) Associate Professor Patricia Halagao will begin an interim appointment to the Board of Education by Governor Neil Abercrombie. The appointment will require confirmation by the state Senate next year.

A 2012 University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching award winner and former Oakland public school teacher, Halagao is an Associate Professor in the College of Education's Department of Curriculum Studies at UH Mānoa. With a focus on themes of culture, partnerships and justice, she is dedicated to education at the classroom, community and global levels.

“I am deeply honored and humbled that the Governor appointed me to the Board of Education,” Halagao said. “I am excited to contribute to the shaping of education in our state, and know that I have an incredible amount of resources to draw upon from the College of Education and the university as a whole.”

Halagao is working on several Filipino curricula projects and serves as co-director of a professional development grant to develop A`o Hawaiʻi: Viewing the Classroom as a Canoe; The Canoe as a Classroom, which supports Hōkūle‘a’s and Hikianalia’s Worldwide Voyage, and to foster educational transformation. She is also the education chair for the State of Hawaiʻi’s proposed Obama Presidential Center.
