The School of Architecture at UH Manoa is proud to announce a special opening of the remodeled Haigo and Irene Shen Architecture Gallery in conjunction with the school’s National Architectural Accreditation Board (NAAB) visit.

On view through Friday, October 12, 2012, the exhibition showcases the works of more than three dozen UH Manoa faculty and lecturers who not only teach, but actively pursue their research and practice internationally.

“The diversity of faculty work goes beyond architecture itself to include sustainability, sculpture, heritage research and community services,” said School of Architecture Assistant Professor and exhibit co-curator Hongtao Zhou.

Six years have passed since the last comprehensive exhibit of work by the school’s growing faculty, many of whom will present their work in Hawaii for the first time. Publications, models and renderings collectively explore the school’s vibrant Pacific Rim focus.

Said School of Architecture Assistant Professor Maria Simon, the exhibit's co-curator, “The exhibition is a rare opportunity to see the work our faculty does outside the academic setting. For students, it’s inspiring and gives them something to work toward."

The variety of items on display demonstrates the breadth of the faculty’s skills and research specialties.

“Lance Walters' applied research on design and fabrication led him to create his own 3D printer, which is featured in the exhibit along with 3D models he produced,” noted Simon. “Large-scale professional works, such as the Park Towers in Dubai designed by lecturer Ma Ry Kim-Johnson, bring such an impressive scope of work to the gallery.”

Following the faculty exhibit, graduate and undergraduate shows will be held each Fall and Spring semester to showcase work and research by students and faculty.
