With the completion of the International Gateway House, sixty percent of students residing on campus this Fall will live in buildings that are brand new or have been significantly renovated within the past five years.

UH Manoa Student Housing Services held a blessing ceremony on Thursday, August 9, 2012, to dedicate the newly renovated Gateway House.  Constructed in 1962, the two-tower complex was the first co-ed resident hall on campus.

Gateway House was shut down in September 2011 to undergo a renovation project that would provide its 218 student occupants with modernized living accommodations.

Improvements include ADA accessibility, wi-fi capability and new windows, plumbing and electrical upgrades throughout the building.

New public areas have been added, as such study lounges on each floor and kitchens in each tower. Rooms include upgraded bathrooms, flooring and furniture.

“The newly renovated International Gateway House, or Gateway, as we fondly call it, adds another dimension to our students’ transformational experience at UH Mānoa,” said Chancellor Tom Apple. "It will provide a supportive learning their living environment in which they can confidently and comfortably pursue their academic dreams.”

The cost of construction and improvements is estimated at $12 million.
