Final Four Candidates Announced in Search for UH Vice President of Academic Affairs

The search committee for the position of vice president of academic affairs (VPAA) for the University of Hawai'i system has announced its final candidates. The VPAA is the chief academic officer for the UH system and reports to the president.

The final candidates for the VPAA position are:

Roger W. Bowen - Dr. Bowen most recently served as the president and CEO of the Milwaukee Public Museum. Prior to that position he served as president of the State University of New York at New Paltz from 1996 to 2001. Dr. Bowen holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of British Columbia.

James P. Chapman - Dr. Chapman is provost of the University of Alaska, Anchorage where he serves as the chief academic officer. Prior to that position he served as president of Shawnee State College, one of Ohio‘s 13 public universities. Dr. Chapman holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Indiana University.

Dianne Francis Harrison - Dr. Harrison is the associate vice president for academic affairs and the dean of Graduate Studies at Florida State University (FSU). She served as the dean of the School of Social Work at FSU from 1994-2000. Dr. Harrison holds a Ph.D. in social work from Washington University.

David McClain - Dr. McClain is the interim vice president of research for the University of Hawai'i System, a position he assumed in March 2003. Dr. McClain is also Dean and First Hawaiian Bank Distinguished Professor of Leadership and Management for the College of Business Administration at UH Mānoa. Dr. McClain holds a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute for Technology.

Public sessions have been scheduled to offer faculty, staff, students and the community an opportunity to meet the candidates, ask questions, and listen to their presentations. They are scheduled as follows:
