UH West Oʻahu deemed military friendly school for third year in a row

The University of Hawai‘i–West Oʻahu was recently named among a select group of higher education institutions nationwide for inclusion in the G.I. Jobs Military Friendly Schools 2012 List, marking the third consecutive year the university was awarded the distinction. The list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students. Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools.

 

UH West O‘ahu’s Pearl City campus, as well as its new campus in Kapolei opening in August 2012, is conveniently located for access by Hawai‘i’s many military veterans as well as active duty members and their families located at Schofield Barracks, Pearl Harbor Navy Base and Hickam Air Force Base.

Awakuni, UH West O‘ahu chancellor and U.S. Marine Corps veteran. “With the opening of our new Kapolei campus in 2012, we’ll be better poised to provide a world-class education to our nation’s heroes through state-of-the-art facilities and flexible schedules right in their backyard.”

 

For the first time this year, G.I. Jobs incorporated a survey of student veterans as part of the list criteria, providing prospective military students with insight into the student veteran experience based on peer reviews. The list was compiled through exhaustive research starting last April when G.I. Jobs polled more than 8,000 schools nationwide. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board consisting of educators and higher education administrators from across the country.

 

A full story and detailed list of Military Friendly Schools will be highlighted in the annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools and on a poster, both of which will be distributed to hundreds of thousands of active and former military personnel in early October. Criteria for making the Military Friendly Schools list included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students, and academic accreditations.
