Medical students again outscore U.S. average

The University of Hawai’i at Mānoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) second-year medical students continue to excel at the national level.

 

For the second year in a row, every one (100%) of the second-year medical students, (MS-2’s) has passed the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam, Step 1. Their mean score is also remarkable. The MS-2's from JABSOM are on track to exceed the national average for seven years in a row.

 

“The commitment our students have toward becoming wonderful physicians who will care for the people of Hawai’i is the major reason for their success," according to Dr. Damon Sakai, Director of the Office of Medical Education. “Again and again we find that JABSOM medical students are as good as any in the world.”

 

Dr. Sakai said the scores reflect how many talented young people we have in Hawai’i. Vice Dean Satoru Izutsu also sent a “Hats off!” to the admissions committee for choosing the best.

 

JABSOM’s innovative curriculum and inspiring faculty also shine. “They provide a unique framework to foster student self-directed learning that is better retained and applied,” said Sakai.
