Two University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa faculty members—Dr. Linda Duckworth, director of International Student Services, and Vanessa Chong-Kuna, advisor at the Study Abroad Center—have been selected to participate in the 2011 Fulbright Program for International Education Administrators (IEA) in Korea and Japan, respectively.
Duckworth will participate in a two-week Korea seminar and Chong-Kuna will participate in a three-week Japan seminar in June 2011 to study the education, society and culture of their respective countries. The announcement of their selection was made by the U.S. Department of State and J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
Duckworth has served as the director of International Student Services since 2000, overseeing services and programs provided to international students who pursue degree and exchange programs. Currently, 1,500 international students originating from 90 plus countries pursue studies at UH Mānoa. Students from Korea represent the second largest international student group. Duckworth was also selected to participate in the 2002 IEA Fulbright Program to Japan, the country of origin for UH Mānoa’s largest number of international students.
Chong-Kuna has served as a study abroad advisor at the Study Abroad Center since 1999. The center offers summer, semester and year-long programs in Asia (four programs in Japan and one in China), Australia, Europe, the Pacific and South America. Students earn resident credits for coursework completed overseas, while faculty teach and conduct research overseas without jeopardizing benefits, tenure, promotion or retirement schemes.
The Fulbright Program, America’s flagship international educational exchange activity, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Over its 65 years of existence, the program has benefited thousands of U.S. faculty and professionals who have studied, taught or done research abroad, with thousands of their counterparts from other countries engaging in similar activities in the U.S.  For more information, visit http://www.cies.org/us_scholars/.
