WHAT:       The first media preview and construction tour of the UH Cancer Center to showcase
completion of the building foundation, a project milestone.
As the walls begin to rise, you’ll see the building progress, and tour one of O‘ahu’s largest
construction projects—the $120 million University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center. New architectural
renderings will be presented along with the first “virtual tour” of the building in CD format.
Kahu Kalekona Bishaw will preside over the burial of a lauhala “remembrance basket”
containing the hopes of hundreds of cancer survivors and community partners.

The building is being constructed to the highest standards and will feature state-of-the-art
technology and optimal design for inspiring innovation and discovery. Scheduled to open in
early 2013, the 150,000 square foot project will be a focal point of the UH medical campus in
Kaka’ako, next to UH Mānoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine.

WHEN:         Wednesday, April 20, 11-11:50 a.m.
A brief presentation will be followed by a “hard-hat” site tour.
Informal box lunch will be served.

WHERE:       Reserved parking for the event is available in the Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park lot, near the corner
                      of Cooke and Ilalo streets.

WHO:           Hear remarks from UH Mānoa Chancellor, Dr. Virginia Hinshaw, and Cancer Center Director,
                      Dr. Michele Carbone.
They will be joined by UH Cancer Consortium partners Art Ushijima, CEO, The Queen’s Health
System; Dr. Virginia Pressler, Executive Vice President, Hawai‘i Pacific Health; and Quin
Ogawa, Chief Financial Officer, Kuakini Health Systems.

A construction update will be provided by Kathy Inouye, COO of Kobayashi Group, and project
architect, Jeff Nakamura of Shimokawa Nakamura.

WHY:            The foundation is completed for the new UH Cancer Center, a milestone of the $100 million
plus project. The new Center will be home to some of the nation’s leading scientists, united in
their quest to combat and cure cancer.

The event also symbolizes the “cementing” of the UH Cancer Consortium, an alliance of
health-care partners joined in their commitment to deliver the most advanced cancer care: The
Queen’s Medical Center, Hawai‘i Pacific Health, Kuakini Health Systems, and JABSOM.
