The North Hawai‘i Education and Research Center of the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is hosting a free public presentation on the Hawaiian monk seal on Monday, October 18, 6:30-8 p.m. at the NHERC in Honoka‘a.

Justin Viezbicke, marine conservation coordinator for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, will speak on the biology and behavior of this endangered mammal and show rare video footage. He will explain existing threats to the seals and discuss ways for the public to assist in conservation.

Only about 1,100 of the seals remain, mostly in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, but their migration to the main Hawaiian Islands is increasing.

RSVPs are requested at 775-8890.
