Robert Bley-Vroman has been appointed interim dean of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature.

The professor of Second Language Studies received his MA in Germanics, and MA and PhD in linguistics from the University of Washington. At UH Mānoa, Bley-Vroman has served as chair of both the Department of Second Language Studies and the Second Language Teaching and Curriculum Center. He also was the first director of the National Foreign Language Resource Center.

Before coming to the UH Mānoa campus, he taught English and applied linguistics in Romania at Universitatea din Cluj, and linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin. At the University of Michigan, Bley-Vroman was director of courses for the English Language Institute.

He replaces Joseph H. O’Mealy, who returned to the faculty as a professor of English after serving as interim dean of the College of LLL for eight years.

“Robert Bley-Vroman comes to the deanship in LLL from the well-regarded and nationally ranked program in Second Language Studies,” said Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Reed Dasenbrock. “He will bring his passion for language and the teaching of language to the challenges of running this unique college, which is so central to our educational and research missions here at UH Mānoa.”
