UH Hilo students study abroad

Fifteen University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo students will start their New Year by embarking on a semester of study abroad. They join 20 other students who will continue their academic adventures abroad for a second semester.

Six received $2,500 IFSA Global Scholarships through a grant from the Institute for Study Abroad Foundation. They are: Shannon Christy, Pontifícia Universida de Católica do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Emily Lambert, University of Ghana, Ghana; Ivan Mercado, Semester at Sea; Gabriel Oliver, Rikkyo University, Japan; Jenny Schabell, University of Stirling, United Kingdom; and Tammy Wong, Seinan Gakuin University, Japan.

Mercado and three others students received the UH Hilo Semester at Sea Scholarship. The others are Leilani Abaya, Annemarie Aweau and Crystal Shaneyfelt. Semester at Sea program participants will visit 10 different countries during the Spring 2010 semester.

In addition, Christy, Wong and two others were awarded the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Christy and Wong each received $5,000, as did Laura Cushman, who will attend Pontificia Universidad Católica del Peru. Jennifer Antilla, who will study at Taiwan University, received $4,000.
