UH Manoa to compete in national recycling competition

Bring recyclables to campus on February 11

As part of the 2009 nationwide RecycleMania competition, the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa‘s Geology Club is holding a RecycleMania kickoff event on Wednesday, February 11, on the lawn near Hawaii Hall. Recyclables will be collected from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on that day.

In addition, in conjunction with a Sustainable Saunder‘s birthday bash, there will be a barbecue celebration on the lawn from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with live entertainment by KTUH DJs, as well as games and events throughout the day. There will be free cake and refreshments for anyone contributing an HI-5 recyclable; barbecue lunches will be available for purchase.

The individual bringing in the most recyclables by weight will win an iPod Shuffle.

Recyclable materials are newspaper, plain paper, glossy paper including magazines, HI-5 containers, other glass and metal containers, electronics for a small fee, and cardboard.

RecycleMania is an annual nationwide recycling competition between participating universities. UHM has taken part since 2007, when Erin Miller, Geology Club president, took the initiative to register the school and publicize the event. The 2009 effort began on January 18 and extends through March 28.

RecycleMania is a friendly competition to promote waste reduction activities in campus communities. Over the 10-week period, UHM will report its recycling and trash data, and will be ranked against other schools.
