University of Michigan Education Dean to Speak on Early Literacy Reform

Karen K. Wixson, dean of the School of Education at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, is the fourth guest lecturer in the Alice and Carl Daeufer Lecture Series of the University of Hawaii at Manoa's College of Education. Wixson will present a lecture entitled "From Policy to Practice in Early Literacy Reform" on Wednesday, April 3, at 6 p.m. at the Wo Center's Luke Auditorium at Punahou School.

The event is free and open to the public. It should be of special interest to educators and policy makers with an interest in literacy and early childhood education.

The lecture series is sponsored by Alice and Carl Daeufer, the University of Hawaii at Manoa's College of Education and the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly.

Wixson's research has spanned a wide range of topics in the field of literacy, including policy, large-scale evaluation, and the instruction and assessment of struggling readers and writers.

Her recent studies have examined literacy policies across the states. In addition to conducting research, she has been a leader in efforts to improve literacy policy, instruction, assessment, and achievement in Michigan. She is co-author of a well-regarded textbook, "Assessment and Instruction of Reading and Writing Disability: An Interactive Approach," which is now in its second edition.
