| WHAT: | A gathering of institutional partners will be held to celebrate and publicly announce a $5.9 million award to the University of Hawaiʻi from the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The award, which will be distributed over a three-year period, is to establish a Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN), an alliance among higher education and research institutions with the common goal of enhancing biomedical research capacity in Hawaiʻi. |

Burns School of Medicine will offer remarks and provide details about the award and its significance. Representatives from various BRIN institutional partners will also be in attendance (see following list). |

BACKGROUND:
The BRIN was awarded to the University of Hawaiʻi by the National Center for Research Resources of the National Institutes of Health. The award is approximately $5.9 million and will be distributed over a three-year period (September 30, 2001 to August 31, 2004). The principal investigator for this project is UH Manoa Interim Chancellor Deane Neubauer and the program director is Pacific Biomedical Research Center (PBRC) Interim Director Martin Rayner, who is also associate dean of basic research for the John A. Burns School of Medicine at UH Manoa.
In order to achieve their objective of enhancing biomedical research capacity in Hawaiʻi, the BRIN partners seek to increase biomedical research funding to Hawaiʻi by expanding research and developing opportunities for faculty and students at other institutions to participate in funded research.
