HONOLULU — The University of Hawaiʻi is pleased to announce its continued support towards improving the lives of our community members by participating in the 2006 Aloha United Way (AUW) Campaign on Oʻahu from Sept. 5, 2006 to Oct. 13, 2006. The university community is encouraged to support this worthy cause and help UH sustain its position as one of the state‘s largest contributors. This year, UH has set a fundraising goal of $410,195, or a 2.5 percent increase over last year.

One of every two people on Oʻahu are touched by AUW‘s wide range of over 400 health and human services programs offered by 63 partner agencies. For example, last year:
· 12,148 children participated in mentoring or tutoring programs
· 2,254 families avoiding becoming homeless
· 4,201 people successfully completed treatment programs
· 15,793 uninsured people received healthcare services

Peter Quigley, chancellor of Leeward Community College; Andrew Hashimoto, dean of the College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources at UH Mānoa; and Jim Nishimoto of the Office of the President, have generously volunteered to serve as the 2006 AUW campaign leaders for the University of Hawaiʻi.

"I am so excited and privileged to be a part of the campaign again this year," said Quigley. "AUW provides essential, sometimes life saving and life changing, services and opportunities for people in need of all ages. I am proud of the way the UH Community Colleges continues to pull together to meet their Aloha United Way goals, and know this year will be no different."

Hashimoto added, "I am pleased that the Aloha United Way and the University of Hawaiʻi will again be partnering to help strengthen Oʻahu families and communities, and that the Aloha United Way will take a proactive role in uniting people and resources through its Community Safety Net initiative."

Nishimoto also shared, "I‘ve witnessed how Aloha United Way partner agencies help meet our community‘s critical health and safety needs. I know that my continued financial support of AUW is needed and well spent. I hope that others will join me by continuing their financial support of AUW."
