A classroom and office building at the University of Hawaiʻi Laboratory School was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon, June 13. Summer session classes began this week, but the two classes scheduled to meet in the building ended at noon so that no students were endangered by the fire.

Several faculty members were displaced by the fire in the office section of the facility.

Administrators spent the afternoon and evening hours calling parents of summer session students to notify them of the fire, and classes resumed on a normal schedule Wednesday morning. Approximately 100 students are enrolled at the campus this summer.

Investigators from the Honolulu Fire Department and the Honolulu Police Department were on hand Tuesday evening to begin their preliminary work to attempt to determine a cause of the fire. Once remaining hot spots were extinguished, the area was secured for further work.

An inventory of losses is now underway as investigative work continues. Lab School officials and senior UH Manoa administrators have begun their planning for short term recovery as well as longer range options.

The building destroyed this week was constructed in the late 1930s.

The university has fielded numerous calls from persons wishing to donate toward the recovery effort. Donations should be directed to the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation, P.O. Box 11270, Honolulu, HI 96828-0270.
