Finalists selected for University of Hawaii System Vice President for Academic Planning and Policy

HONOLULU — The search advisory committee has identified three candidates for the position of Vice President for Academic Planning and Policy of the University of Hawaiʻi System. The candidates are scheduled to take part in meetings and interviews on Oʻahu and the neighbor islands with key administrators, faculty, student representatives and other university groups during the last week of April and first week of May. Following meetings with the candidates, the committee and the community at large will submit comments to President David McClain who will recommend one of the finalists to the UH Board of Regents.

"We are very pleased with the quality of experience our candidates have displayed in their academic careers," said Gene Awakuni, Chancellor of the University of Hawaiʻi-West Oʻahu and chair of the search advisory committee. "The committee looks forward to meeting with each of the finalists and learning more about what each might bring to the position."

The three finalists are Dr. Amanda L. Golbeck, professor of internal medicine and professor of preventive medicine and public health at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita; Dr. Linda Johnsrud, interim vice-president for academic planning and policy at the University of Hawaiʻi System; and Dr. Jay Noren, executive vice-president and provost, and dean of the graduate college at the University of Nebraska.

Amanda L. Golbeck has been a professor of internal medicine, and professor of preventive medicine and public health, at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita since 2003. Her previous administrative experience includes positions for the State of Kansas Board of Regents as vice president for academic affairs, and at Wichita State University as director of its medicine and public health program. She received her doctorate and master‘s degrees in biostatistics from the University of California at Berkeley.

Linda Johnsrud has been interim vice president for academic planning and policy at the University of Hawaiʻi System since March 2005. Previously, she was interim chancellor of the University of Hawaiʻi—West Oʻahu, associate vice president for academic planning and policy, and professor in education administration at the University of Hawaiʻi—Mānoa. She received her doctorate degree from Ohio State University in higher education, and her master‘s degree from Western Illinois University in college student personnel administration.

Jay Noren has been at the University of Nebraska since 2002 as executive vice president and provost, and dean of the graduate college. He also serves as a professor in the department of preventive and societal medicine. His previous administrative experience includes positions for the National Institute of Health Policy‘s Health Workforce Program, where he served as director, and Texas A&M University, as vice chancellor for health affairs. He received a master‘s in public health from Harvard University, and a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Minnesota.
