In partnership with Tau Dance Theatre, UH-Mānoa Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and ILI Dances/ILI Performing Arts, Filipino American History and Heritage month culminates with Helobung, a music, dance, and song demonstration and workshops. The events will take place on October 25 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Leeward CC Wai‘anae Moku Education Center and October 26 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Leeward Theatre, Leeward CC Pu‘uloa campus, Hawai‘i.

Helobung is an artist collective from Mindanao’s indigenous Tboli community, Lake Sebu, Southern Philippines. Helobung means “endless joy,” a unique experience offered by this long-standing collective of indigenous Tboli musicians, singers, and dancers. Helobung is sponsored by Center Stage, a public diplomacy program of the U.S. State Department. O‘ahu is the last leg of Helobung’s tour of the United States with a primary focus on community engagement with Filipino Americans, the broader community and other Indigenous groups.

The Helobung event is free and open to the campus and the public. In this rare opportunity for people in Hawai‘i to experience indigenous arts from the Southern Philippines, the five artists will give a demonstration of their dances, music and songs, teach participants movements, and engage attendees in a discussion about indigenous Tboli culture.

The Filipino Studies program at Leeward Community College is the only program within the UH community college system that offers an Academic Subject Certificate with courses on history, culture, identity, and the performing arts related to the Philippines and the Filipino American experience.
