Oʻahu motorists are asked to plan accordingly for increased traffic starting Monday, August 21, especially in the morning hours, as the fall 2023 semester begins for an estimated 39,000 University of Hawaiʻi students at six campuses.

The area around UH Mānoa, including both directions of the H1 Freeway and the surrounding surface streets, is expected to see the largest increase in traffic as classes start for about 19,000 students.

The other UH campuses are Leeward Community College, Kapiʻolani Community College, Honolulu Community College, UH West Oʻahu and Windward Community College.

Normally, traffic is heavier for the first two weeks of the semester. The traffic is expected to be lighter than pre-pandemic years as more courses are online or partially online and more UH employees are teleworking up to two days a week.

UH encourages students, faculty, staff and administration to consider alternative modes of transportation including The Bus, the new Skyline rail system, as well as bicycling, walking, skateboarding, etc. for those who are able and live near their campus.
