WHAT: The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa will hold its annual open house at the IfA headquarters in Mānoa. The event is open to the public. Hundreds of people attend the event each year.

WHEN: Sunday, April 23, 11 a.m.– 4 p.m.

WHERE: IfA, 2680 Woodlawn Drive Honolulu HI 96822

WHY: The event will offer hands-on activities, demonstrations and short talks about astronomy, space science and physics.

OTHER FACTS:

  • Admission and parking will be free.
  • Two portable planetariums will be available for participants to explore. 
  • Special telescopes will be on hand to observe the Sun and its spectrum. 
  • IfA astronomers will host brief presentations throughout the day.
  • Keiki-friendly activities include an exoplanet craft station, viewing space-themed Lego creations, makahiki (traditional) games and more.
  • This year’s guest organizations include the Hawaiʻi Space Flight Laboratory and Hawaiʻi Space Grant Consortium. Displays will be provided by TMT, Bishop Museum, Hawaiʻi Lego Users Group, National Solar Observatory, Hawaiian Astronomical Society, Honolulu Zoo, Ohana Kilo Hōkū, Hawaii Rockets, Civil Air Patrol and the Hawaiʻi Science and Technology Museum.
