VNR: UH Mānoa showcases research excellence at the State Capitol

WHAT: Wearable sensors for patients with cystic fibrosis, addressing farmer stress in Hawaiʻi, and monitoring coastal water conditions were some of the research projects showcased at the Mānoa Research Day by University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff across 40 disciplines at the Hawaiʻi State Capitol.

WHO: More than 100 UH Mānoa students, researchers, faculty and staff participated in the demonstrations and informational tables for Hawaiʻi lawmakers and representatives.

WHY: Hawaiʻi lawmakers and representatives engaged with UH Mānoa students, faculty and staff to learn about the wide variety and impact of research initiatives.

OTHER FACTS:

  • Researchers used a 3D printer to create wearable sensors designed to help patients with cystic fibrosis or similar health conditions. Wearable sensors help to personalize health monitoring and improve patient health.
  • Researchers at the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources displayed their findings on investigating farmer stress and well-being in Hawaiʻi. 
  • UH Mānoa is one of only four U.S. universities with the simultaneous designation as a land, sea, space, and sun grant institution.
  • UH Mānoa is one of only 95 doctoral universities categorized among public institutions with the highest research activity (Carnegie R1 designation). 
  • UH researchers highlighted the innovative research that leverages our unique Pacific-Asia location and faculty expertise in strategic areas with local and global impacts.
  • UH brought in a record $505 million in extramural funding in fiscal year 2022. Extramural funding is external investments from the federal government, industry and non-profit organizations that support research and academic activities conducted by university faculty and staff. UH Mānoa accounted for $366 million of the extramural awards.
  • UH Mānoa is consistently ranked among the top 2% globally by major higher education rankings services.
