Linda Johnsrud appointed interim vice president for academic planning and policy

UH Board of Regents also approves Manoa interim nursing and dental hygiene dean and UHH interim vice chancellor for academic affairs

HONOLULU — The University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents (BOR) last month approved the appointment of Linda Johnsrud as interim vice president for academic planning and policy for the University of Hawaiʻi System. Johnsrud, who was previously interim associate vice president for planning and policy, also was concurrently acting chancellor of UH-West Oʻahu.

"Linda Johnsrud is eminently qualified to be the chief academic officer of the University of Hawaiʻi System," said UH Interim President David McClain . "Her leadership over the past 18 months at UH-West Oʻahu has elevated the performance of that campus and has inspired the faculty and students there. The breadth and depth of her knowledge of the field of higher education management make her extraordinarily valuable to the UH System."

Johnsrud upheld a distinguished career at the University of Hawaiʻi for the past 16 years. Professor of higher education in the College of Education, UH Mānoa, Johnsrud has published extensively on work life issues of faculty and administrative staff, with particular attention to issues of morale, mobility, and mentoring. She was associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Education and chair of the UH Mānoa Faculty Senate. Nationally, she was elected to the Executive Council of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and she was selected as a Fellow in the American Council on Education (ACE) Fellows program, serving the University of Minnesota System. A frequent speaker on campus and in the community, Dr. Johnsrud has worked with colleges and universities in Minnesota, Arizona, Guam, Japan, Korea, and Western Australia. She held a three year term as consulting editor for the leading academic journal, Research in Higher Education.

Johnsrud holds a bachelor‘s in English education from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, a master‘s in college student personnel administration from Western Illinois University, and a doctorate in higher education with cognate in sociology from Ohio State University.

In other personnel action, the BOR also approved the appointments of Lois Magnussen as interim dean of the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene at UH Mānoa and Stephen Hora as interim vice chancellor for academic affairs at UH Hilo.

Magnussen has been on the faculty of the University of Hawaiʻi since 1978. Her previous positions include serving as interim associate dean, director of student services and department chair for nursing in the School of Nursing at UH Mānoa, and program director for the associate degree program in nursing at Kapiʻolani Community College and Kauaʻi Community College. She received her bachelor‘s and master‘s in nursing from Loma Linda University and her EdD in educational foundations from UH Mānoa.

Hora joined UH Hilo in 1985 and served as a professor of management science and statistics, division chair of business and economics and interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Prior to joining UH Hilo, he served on the faculties of Arizona State University and Texas Tech University. He received his doctorate in business administration from the University of Southern California.
