Spark Matsunaga Institute for Peace offers scholarships

HONOLULU — The Spark Matsunaga Institute for Peace at UH Mānoa is offering two scholarships for students interested in peacemaking leadership, peace studies, conflict resolution and international understanding.

NOBUMOTO TANAHASHI PEACE SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The Nobumoto Tanahashi Peace Scholarship Award was established in memory of the late Reverend (1906-1996), who founded the Heiwa Kyokai (Order of Peace Congregation), a school of Shintoism that is committed to peace. Applicants must be full-time graduate students of the UH system focusing on peace studies, conflict resolution or peacemaking leadership. A one-page statement of the dissertation project, including an estimation of the date of defense is required. One scholarship of up to $5,000 will be awarded.

JACOB PEACE MEMORIAL AWARD

The Jacob Peace Memorial Award was established in memory of Professor Philip E. Jacob (1914-1985), who devoted his personal and academic life to the search for peace and inter-cultural understanding. He tried through scholarship, teaching and public service to strengthen bonds of international cooperation and the processes of peacemaking. Applicants must be full-time graduate or undergraduate students of the UH system who have demonstrated through a project, proposal or equivalent endeavor, a commitment to peacemaking leadership, peace studies, conflict resolution and intercultural understanding. A 2.5 grade point average is required. One scholarship of up to $500 will be awarded.
