Vietnamese Culture

Vietnam is a beautiful country known for its delicious cuisine including phở, bánh mì, and gỏi cuốn, as well as its elegant traditional áo dai and its official language, Vietnamese, spoken by 95 million people worldwide.

The Vietnamese Program at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, part of the Department of Indo-Pacific Languages & Literatures, provides students with an opportunity to explore this vibrant culture while developing language skills that open doors to deeper connections and new opportunities.

Through engaging courses, cultural events, and the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA), students gain a meaningful understanding of Vietnam’s history, traditions, and society. Whether you have Vietnamese heritage or are simply eager to learn, we invite you to join our program and be part of a supportive community passionate about Vietnamese language and culture.

How To Get Involved

There are many ways to get involved with the Vietnamese Program here at UH Manoa! Some ways include:

  • Enroll in Vietnamese Language Courses – Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills, our courses help you develop proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing Vietnamese while learning about its cultural significance.
  • Take Cultural Courses – We also offer courses that do not require Vietnamese language skills, such as IP 360V: Southeast Asian Food, Music, and Rituals: Vietnam and IP 370V: Southeast Asian Travelogue: People, Places, and Practices: Vietnam, which explore Vietnam’s rich traditions, history, and contemporary society.
  • Join the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) – Connect with fellow students who share an interest in Vietnamese culture. VSA hosts social events, cultural celebrations, and community service projects that bring students together in a fun and supportive environment. Vietnamese language proficiency is not required! VSA provides a welcoming community for anyone interested in Vietnamese culture, whether or not they speak the language.
  • Attend Cultural Events – Participate in Tết (Lunar New Year) festivities and other events that highlight Vietnamese traditions, music, and cuisine.
  • Engage with the Community – Volunteer or intern with local Vietnamese organizations and businesses to gain real-world experience and connect with native speakers.

No matter your background or experience level, there’s a place for you in our Vietnamese Program. We encourage you to get involved, make new connections, and deepen your appreciation for this rich and dynamic culture!

Hear from our students!
