Transportation

The Island of Hawai’i (often called the “Big Island”) is the largest of all the Hawaiian Islands. The two main cities on the island are Hilo and Kailua-Kona (commonly referred to as Kona).

Although Hilo is the larger city, Kona attracts most of the island’s tourism. As a result, there are significantly more flights to Kona, and flights to Kona are often less expensive than those to Hilo.

For this reason, many travelers choose to fly into Kona, rent a car there, and drive to Hilo (approximately a two-hour drive).

This approach provides access to cheaper flights, a larger pool of rental cars, and flexibility to spend time in Kona before or after visiting Hilo.

If you plan to rent a car on the Big Island, it is important to make your reservation as early as possible (ideally before purchasing your flight), as rental cars are limited.

If rental cars in Hilo are unavailable, you may then consider flying into Kona, and driving to Hilo instead.
