Program Information

Who should attend?

The HARDI is offered to an invited cohort of up to 30 students from selected Ph.D. programs across Europe, Asia, and North America. Admission to the Institute is by invitation only. Only high-quality Ph.D. programs throughout the world will be contacted to nominate one Ph.D. student.

Tuition and fees

There is no tuition for attending the program as Shidler College covers instructional costs. However, students (or their schools) are responsible for all other expenses such as travel, food, and lodging.

Lecture Requirements

The exceptional researchers who will teach HARDI will choose and offer a reading list to Ph.D. students a month in advance of their classes. Invited Ph.D. students will obtain and read the assigned reading list in preparation for attending their classes in Hawaii. HARDI classes will be offered in seminar format, and Ph.D. students are expected to prepare and share ideas. Upon completing the program, students are issued a HARDI Certificate of Completion.

Accommodation

There are two campus housing options for HARDI students: UHM Conference Housing and East-West Center (Lincoln Hall) Housing.

  • UHM Conference Housing is a less expensive option managed by the University of Hawaii at “Manoa Students Housing” services.
    • The Conference Housing application will be available after December 2025, once the University finalizes rates and housing availability for Summer 2026. Please check this page in January 2026, when we will update it with all relevant information for Summer 2026 reservations.  In the meantime, if you would like to review the types of University housing and estimated pricing (subject to change), you may visit here.

Please know that Lincoln Hall has limited apartments and is highly in demand. They offer hotel-like services, including towel changing and although there is no air conditioning, students were satisfied with the ceiling fans.

You may apply for housing at Lincoln Hall with the application linked here. Please upload a copy of your HARDI Admission letter signed by Dean Vance Roley as an attachment to the electronic application form.

Requirements for International Students

HARDI is the Ph.D. consortium organized in association with the Hawaii Accounting Research Conference (HARC). International students attending HARDI are subject to the exact visa requirements as they would be for HARC. Therefore, if a student does not need a visa to enter the U.S. for conferences, they also will not need a visa to attend HARDI.

If you have any questions, please email us at harc@hawaii.edu
