Welcome to HARDI 2021!

Who should attend

The HARDI is offered to an invited cohort of up to 30 students from selected Ph.D. programs across Europe, Asia, and North America. Admission to the Institute is by invitation only. Only high-quality Ph.D. programs throughout the world will be contacted to nominate one Ph.D. student.

Tuition and fees

There is no tuition for attending the program as the Shidler College covers instructional costs. However, students (or their schools) are responsible for all other expenses such as travel, food, and lodging.

Lecture requirements

The exceptional researchers who will teach HARDI will choose and offer a reading list to Ph.D. students a month in advance of their classes. Invited Ph.D. students will obtain and read the assigned reading list and in preparation of attending their classes in Hawaii. HARDI classes will be offered in seminar format, and Ph.D. students are expected to prepare and share ideas. Upon completing the program, students are issued a HARDI Certificate of Completion.

Accommodation

We recommend that students stay on campus in Hale Manoa. This dormitory can be reserved after August, and students can make their reservation using the “HARDI calling group.” Additional information will be provided directly to admitted students. The dormitory cost is approximately $35 for single occupancy and $45 for double occupancy per night. HARDI participants can also choose to reserve and stay on campus at Lincoln Hall:

Students may also choose to live off-campus during the HARDI program.

Requirements for international students

International students will have to meet Graduate Division English proficiency and other requirements. When necessary, international students can use the HARDI’s acceptance/invitation letter to apply for B-1 visas.
