Aloha Graduate Students:
The Hawaiʻi Labor Relations Board, & State of Hawaiʻi is this Thursday the 19th at 10am! Location is Aliʻiolani Hale, 417 South King Street. No signs allowed, but ALU and other local union shirts are excellent for silently declaring your labor advocacy in the room as public audience. Press conference with allied unions is beforehand at 9am, but prioritize the hearing itself if your schedule only allows you to attend one. The hearing will end by 11:30am at the very latest, and verdict will be announced by April. We need to fill the room with 70+ people, and anyone who supports union causes can come! You do not need to be a currently employed graduate assistant or have a union shirt. There is a sign-up sheet to coordinate transportation: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iuNHtgmKdTerpLU-DdSJbqLLQatSZnNulhSu0vF36ws/edit?usp=sharing The oral arguments for ALU include a declaration that members of ALU are persons in public employment within the meaning of Article 8, Section 2 of the Hawaiʻi Constitution and H.R.S. § 89-2; a declaration that they have the right to organize for the purposes of collective bargaining; and a declaration that they have the right to be included within one or more of the bargaining units established by H.R.S. § 89-6. This case is super important for labor in Hawaiʻi and it is vital that we have as many people as possible in the room to indicate to the judges that this issue and each of our experiences matter!
