3 + 2 Program

Thank you for your interest in UHM 3+2 Programs! You may follow the steps of participating UHM 3+2 Programs. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need assistance.

Step One: Before Apply for UHM 3+2 Programs

Each UHM 3+2 Program is in cooperation with a partner institution in specific field(s) of study. Even if your institution has a 3+2 partnership with UHM, it does not mean that every student from the same institution is qualified to apply. Please check with your college/school to make sure if your undergraduate major is covered by the 3+2 Program Agreement that UHM has with your institution.

There are some requirements that students need to meet before apply for UHM 3+2 Program. Generally, by the end of students’ junior year, you should have:

  • Completed all undergraduate academic requirements with the exception of the culminating project. The culminating project will need to be finished during the first year at UHM and graded by the faculty members of students’ undergraduate institutions.
  • Met English test requirement (meet one of the following requirements only):
  • TOEFL- iBT 85
  • IELTS (Academic) 6.5 with no less than 6.0 of each subject.
  • Maintained minimum GPA 3.0 or equivalent grade point on a 100-scale

(Some graduate programs may have additional entrance requirements. For detailed program requirements, please contact UHM 3+2 Program Coordinator.)

Step Three: Pre-departure Information

Once you are admitted to the UHM 3+2 Program, please make sure you read all the information included in your admission letter that UHM sent to you. Download the Pre-Departure Checklist to prepare your trip to Hawaii.

Step Four: Study at UHM

Once you are granted the admission offers, you will be admitted by exception as the UHM graduate students in the designated programs. The typical study period for each 3+2 student is two years and the student will need to meet the requirements to be able to continue the second year of 3+2 Program at UHM.

First Year at UHM

During the first academic year at UHM, students will be considered as the regular UHM graduate students, simultaneously, the senior year of undergraduate students at their undergraduate institutions. Hence, in order to maintain a valid student status in both institutions, students need to meet the following requirements:

  • Taking required courses for the master’s degree programs at UHM.
  • Finishing up the culminating project for the undergraduate degree programs. By the end of the first year at UHM, students will submit the culminating project to their undergraduate institutions for grading.
  • Submit the following documents to UHM 3+2 Program before your second academic year at UHM:
    • One official transcript with English translation
    • One official Undergraduate Degree with English translation
    • If applicable, One official Certificate of Graduation with English translation
  • Failure to produce official records of the bachelor’s degree conferral will automatically restrict any future registration and students will not be able to continue in their master’s program at UHM.
