Further Investigations: Conductivity

Most metallic construction materials corrode (wear away) in seawater. Some dissolve in the water; others react with the dissolved ions (for example, in water zinc (Zn) combines with OH- ions to form Zn(OH)2). Find out what kinds of materials are used:
  1. To prevent rapid corrosion of ship hulls and offshore oil rigs.
  2. To protect bridges, wharfs, and other structures that are partially embedded in water.
  3. To provide durable, noncorrosive equipment for sailors and others who work at sea.
