The GET Local initiative began in 2016 as a collaborative effort by the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Cooperative Extension agents in agriculture and human resource based fields. The Extension agents incorporate the concept of GET Local and educate the community and stakeholders on the commodities available locally in order to increase consumer interest, grower knowledge, and general public awareness of local agriculture.
The initiative has expanded to become an umbrella for a variety of programming and collaborations between researchers, instructors, and extension faculty within the Collage of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) around local agriculture including Farm2School, the Food Systems Working Group, container gardening, local commodities, home and school gardens, healthy recipes, and field day events.
Members of the initial GET Local initiative (L-R) Jensen Uyehara, Lynn Nakamura-Tengan, Jari Sugano, Nancy Ooki, Kylie Tavares, Ahmjad Ahmad, Kiersten Akahoshi, Joshua Silva, Sharon Motomura Wages. Missing: Julia Zee.
