Revised and updated, the third edition of A History of Hawai‘i is a comprehensive account of Hawai‘i’s history that includes primary documents, political cartoons, stories and poems, graphs, a glossary, maps, timelines, and activities fostering critical thinking. Each chapter contains a Skill Set activity as well as several opportunities for students to think about the material in the context of their own lives through an activity titled “Your Viewpoint.”

Coverage is by both time frame and theme. Three units each tell the story of a time period:

• Unit 1: 1778 to 1900
• Unit 2: 1900 to 1945 and
• Unit 3: 1945 to the present

Within these defining time periods, each unit addresses four topics:

• Governmental and Political History
• Economic History
• Social History
• Land History

The new text includes greatly expanded coverage of Hawaiian cultural and political movements throughout the eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries, from the overthrow and annexation to the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage and includes biographies of many cultural practitioners and activists. Coverage goes up to 2016, highlighting current economic and social issues including education, homelessness, and rail development as well as sovereignty and the conflict over the Thirty Meter Telescope, among other topics.
