8) Briefly explain the assessment activities that took place.
We continued the former SLO assessment (reported in the previous report) till Fall 2016 and started the new SLO assessment since Spring 2017. In this new assessment program, we assess each Communicology major twice, once when they sign up for the major and a second time right before they graduate. This allows us to perform a "Time 2 vs. Time 1" comparison to evaluate the effect of taking Communicology classes on students' mastery of course SLOs. The assessments are performed on Qualtrics, a professional online survey platform, with 37 multiple choice questions derived from core course SLOs. Assessment results are stored in a password-protected account, which only the Department Chair and Department Assessment Committee members have access to.

Because the new assessment program is our focus, we only report the sample size of the new program here. Since Spring 2017, 103 students have completed the Time-1 assessment (when they signed up for the Communicology major) and 10 students have completed the Time-2 assessment (right before they graduate). We sampled all Communicology majors.

13) Summarize the results of the assessment activities checked in question 7. For example, report the percentage of students who achieved each SLO.
1) There is a five point increase in average assessment scores from Time 1 assessment (taken when students signed up for the major; average = 59) to Time 2 assessment (taken when students were about to graduate; average = 64).
2) Of the four students who had completed both Time 1 and Time 2 assessments, three showed increases in average assessment scores. Student 1 improved from 54 to 68; Student 2 improved from 51 to 70; and Student 3 improved from 51 to 78. These amount to an average of 20-point increase from Time 1 to Time 2. The fourth student had the same Time-1 and Time-2 scores (= 54).

This new program is ongoing and we have been using the results to validate the design of the new assessment program.

We have been streamlining the administration of the assessment since the start of the new assessment program.
