  • Please join us and our friends at @uhm_army_rotc to wear denim👖
on April 25th to raise awareness of rape and sexual assault. #SAAM #pauviolence
.
.
.
.
Denim Day is a campaign that began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans 👖 she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual harassment, abuse, assault and rape. In this sexual violence prevention and education campaign we ask community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.

  • Film screening of “Call Her Ganda” Friday, March 8 5:00-9:00pm at the UH Mānoa Art Auditorium. This award winning documentary is about Jennifer Laude, a transgender woman who was murdered by a U.S. marine in the Philippines. The film narrates the events surrounding her death, the subsequent trial that followed bringing to light the colonial relationship between the Philippines and the United States, and the activism by the LGBTQ+ community in the Philippines to put pressure on the government and the military. This incident highlights the various systems of oppression happening at the same time such as transmisogyny, colonialism, racism, militarism, and sex/gender based violence. #pauviolence #callherganda

A simple act can change a feeling, someone’s day, someone’s life. What #1Thing will you do to make a difference?

  • October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

What is #1Thing you can do to support survivors of domestic violence?
.
.
.
The #1Thing message helps individuals and communities to articulate and understand how our collective “one things” can lead to the social transformation we all desire to see. Many people care and understand that domestic violence is a serious public health problem, but they don’t take action. They want to do something but believe their actions can’t make a difference, but imagine if 7.4 billion individuals each commit to doing one thing – this collective action will definitely create real social transformation. Change can start with only #1Thing.
