  • The #pauviolence team would like to thank the @hscadv.808 for hosting the Annual Domestic Violence Conference. What a beautiful day to honor those who have paved the way in the great work being done to end intimate partner violence and making strides for the future of this field. The self-care sessions were especially inspiring and a necessary reminder of the importance of taking care of hearts. #pauviolence also wants to welcome this year's MSW practicum students, Mary and Hannah! Welcome to the PAU Family! #healthylove808 #uhmanoa

  • We take on so much everyday. Passing classes, listening to our friends' troubles, thinking about how to save money, taking care of family, and the list goes on. You are amazing for being able to give and care for those you love in addition to all your responsibilities. Take time for yourself. Take care of your heart. Just like on the airplane, you have to put on your oxygen mask before you help others. What does taking care of yourself look like? #takegoodcareofyourheart #uhmanoa #pauviolence

pauviolence "#Repost @fightingformei {sept 12 '17, 6:11 pm} I feel so strong. I feel unconquerable. My heart is still pounding faintly in my ears, my shirt is damp with sweat, and I'm running on PB&J and adrenaline, but the feeling of triumph is deafening in comparison. I just performed a poem I wrote about the aftermath of rape, "Gray", with hundreds of students and random onlookers at my university. I'd seen the sign-ups for the poetry slam weeks before. I knew that this was an opportunity I had to take. Although I'm outspoken on social media, due to mental illness, it's difficult for me to venture outside myself IRL. I consider it an achievement to converse with a classmate. I seek out secluded areas for study. I don't go to campus events. On the surface, I couldn't believe I'd acted so impulsively in volunteering to share something so personal with so many. In my heart, I knew I was doing exactly what Mei would do. Because I may be afraid, but I am also an advocate. I may struggle to free it, but I'm not one to keep my story to myself. I became increasingly anxious as the hours, minutes ticked away. I considered ditching last-minute, slipping away to take the bus home and hide in my bed. It would be so easy. I stayed. I sat through the first 7-odd contestants. When my name was called, I walked onto the stage. I looked out at the sea of faces gathered before me, squared my shoulders, and spoke my truth. _ In the seconds after, realizing I still had my audience's attention, I added: "To anyone who has been abused, I want to tell you, it's not your fault. I believe you. You're not alone." The spectators erupted in loud applause. As I returned, flushing, to my seat, someone offered a high-five. After winners were announced and the crowd began to disperse, a woman approached asking if she could hug me. She divulged some of her story, and I listened. I soaked in the profound, unfamiliar sense of being connected with her, with every human present that evening. I may not have won a prize. My poem wasn't some lengthy, brilliantly executed assemblage of the English language. But it was what I needed to say. And for many of those watching, I believe it was"

  • Happening tonight! The [respect] campaign presents a free screening of β€œShots”, a short film that looks at the intersection of alcohol and sexual violence. This film portrays a group of classmates that get together at a bar, and as the night goes on an incident of sexual violence occurs. Audiences will see how each character is affected by the incident of sexual violence, and are left to think and discuss how this could have been prevented. β€œShots” will be followed up by an interactive dialogue session where students will be able to share their thoughts about the scenario portrayed in the film, and discuss how bystanders can make a difference. #respecthawaii #pauviolence #dosomething #jelloshots (alcohol-free)

  • Education Secretary Betsy DeVos announced her plans last week to revoke or rescind the Campus Sexual Assault Rules under Title IX and already has begun the process to do so. Any change that weakens Title IX protections will diminish efforts in addressing and preventing sexual assault in our schools.
Thankfully UH President David Lassner has vowed to uphold Title IX regardless of DeVos' attacks.
Let's gather to protest the continued brutality and misogny of the Trump administration, AND to show our support for Title IX and Lassner's principled stance!
WHERE : UH Manoa in front of Hawaiβ€˜i Hall (on the side by Varney Circle and QLC)
WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 13, 11am-12pm

  • We can prevent sexual violence. We don't have to be there when the actual assault is happening, but we can read the signs when something is headed in the wrong direction. If our friends are too drunk and trying to take advantage of other people, tell them it's time to go somewhere else. If our friends are getting too drunk with people that aren't gonna take care of them, take care of them and take them home. And if someone talks about how crazy drunk someone was when they had sex with them, tell them #alcoholisnotconsent. #protecttheline #respecthawaii #pauviolence #ourkuleana #allofourresponsibility

  • pauviolence ""I always wondered why somebody didn't do something about that, then I realized I'm that somebody." It's [respect] week (technically 10 days) at all the University of Hawai'i campuses. #respecthawaii is a campaign to prevent sexual violence. We want to educate everyone about the line that is crossed leading to sexual violence. Everyone's line looks different. The theme this year is to #protecttheline, meaning we can all have a role in protecting the line between healthy sexual activity and sexual violence for ourselves and our friends. #knowtheline #respecttheline #protecttheline Follow your campus #pauviolence programs to learn what you can do to protect the line. #universityofhawaii #uhmanoa #uhwo #uhhilo #uhmaui #kauaicc #kapiolanicommunitycollege #honolulucommunitycollege #windwardcommunitycollege #leewardcommunitycollege #hawaiicommunitycollege"
