About the Quantitative Reasoning Working Group (2014-2015)

Purpose: This group’s task was to ensure the required undergraduate curriculum offers students sufficient opportunities to develop quantitative reasoning (QR) skills and therefore be able to meet Mānoa’s standard of performance in this area (note: the standard of performance will be determined by faculty).

The working group was established by the request of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee, the General Education Committee, Foundations Board, and the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in spring 2014.

The QRWG successfully accomplished its task in April 2015 after 14 months of collaborative and collegial work.

Major Accomplishments of the QRWG:

  • Defined quantitative reasoning for the campus
  • Created hallmarks for a foundational quantitative reasoning course
  • Regularly communicated efforts and received feedback from faculty at all UH campuses
  • Used our research of quantitative reasoning at other universities in the U.S. and in the literature to guide our recommendations

Faculty Senate approved a QR resolution on 4/15/2015:

Faculty Senate approved UHM Quantitative Reasoning Hallmarks on 1/20/2016:
