June 27, 1845: Letter from Kekūanāoʻa to Keoni Ana
This letter, dated June 27, 1845 and addressed to Keoni Ana, is a nice example of every day official government correspondence. In Kekūanāoʻa’s letter, he respectfully requests to be excused from the Legislature because he has jury trials that day at the Fort. A transcription of this letter is provided below.

Aloha oe ~
ka mea Hanohano Kiekie ke Kuhina. Ke hai aku nei au ia oe me ka mahalo. Eia koʻu la i hana Jure ai ma ka Papu nei. A no ka Ahaolelo ke noi aku nei au. E ai mai kuu mea Hanohano e noho au e hana i kaʻu hana. A e haawi mai no noi i ka lohe.
A i na ua ai maikai oe. E hai ae oe i ka Aha olelo. Aloha oe.
