Education

We are committed to fostering diverse and supportive, life-long learning environments that enhance critical thinking, creativity, and humility.

Psych residents

Our psychiatry residency program is designed to train residents as clinicians who are well rounded in clinical work, scholarly research, and community service. Our program provides extraordinary opportunities for residents to learn in a culturally rich setting with an ethnically diverse population. In addition to our general psychiatry program, we have fellowship opportunities in addiction medicine, addiction psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry.

The Department of Psychiatry is committed to providing UH-JABSOM medical students with psychiatric education of the highest quality. We participate in medical student education at all levels, including: the basic problem-based learning units (during the first and second years), the clinical skills preceptorships (notably, the “brain and behavior” subunit), the third-year clerkship, and fourth-year electives.

We are committed to enhancing students’ learning of the biological, behavioral, populational, and clinical aspects of medicine; as we believe that embracing this comprehensive approach can lead to the best care for patients. We take pride in the fact that, among our graduating students, our recruitment rate into the specialty of psychiatry is around twice the national average (of 3 to 4%).

Continuing Medical Education (CME)

Our Continuing Medical Education Program includes Psychiatry Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, and Department sponsored conferences and webinars.

The Psychiatry Grand Rounds series seeks to promote excellence and quality in clinical care by covering topics related to recent advances in medical care, scientific advances that affect the practice of medicine; and provide a forum for discussion of topics that strengthen the relationship of psychiatry to the broader community. Our program is committed to ensuring culture is included. There is no charge to attend. The Queen’s Medical Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ in exchange for attendance and evaluation. Psychiatry Grand rounds will be held via WebEx from 12:00-1:00pm on Fridays throughout the fall, winter, and spring, with a brief hiatus in July and August.
