Lecture: “Home in an Urban Jungle,” by Paul Gabriel L. Cosme

Please come to another lecture, “Home in an Urban Jungle”: Cruel Sentimentality Through Popular Music in Manila.

Date: October 18, 2024, 11:45 am-1:30 pm, Moore Hall 319 (Tokioka Room).

Here, Paul Gabriel L. Cosme will share the outcome of his research with an audience fascinated with Philippine music. He says: “Going back home” in the Philippine context has been understood as returning to the pastoral province, away from the bustling Metropolitan Manila. However, recent local hits like Zild’s “Kyusi” and Lola Amour’s “Raining in Manila” hint at a growing sentiment and even affection toward the urban center despite worsening living conditions in the city.
