Deadlines and Admission Process

The deadline for Fall 2025 admission, November 15, 2024, has passed.

The UH Marine Bio graduate program will accept applications for Fall admission September – November 15.

The Graduate Division accepts applications year-round on behalf of dozens of UH graduate programs.
However, please note:

  • MBGP only accepts applications submitted during the program’s application period of September – November 15.
  • MBGP accepts one cohort of new students each Fall.  The program does not offer Spring admission.
  • MBGP will not consider applications submitted outside of the September – November application period.

Due to the high volume of applications, the program may not be able to communicate individually with each applicant. You are responsible for ensuring that all components of your application are submitted by the deadline.

Admission to the UH MBGP

Application Evaluation

The UH MBGP application evaluation is a complicated process that is not solely dependent on an applicant’s academic record.  The MBGP seeks graduate students with a high potential for success in the MBio research programs.

Laboratory Assignments

One of the most important steps in the MBGP application process is identifying a potential faculty sponsor.  The number of spaces available for new graduate students is directly related to opportunities available in the MBio graduate faculty labs.  New MBio graduate students immediately join a lab when they begin the MBio graduate program.

As an interdisciplinary graduate program, MBio graduate faculty represent multiple departments at UH Manoa.  See which UH faculty admit graduate students through the MBGP here.

Required Foundation Course, August 4 – 15

Students admitted to the MBGP are required to attend the program’s foundation course MBIO 600: Kūlana Noiʻi – Introduction to Place-Based Methodologies in Hawaiʻi.  MBIO 600 is held before the start of Fall semester, tentatively scheduled for August 4 – 15.

Admission Rates and Decisions

The MBGP receives approximately 100 – 120 applications each year.  The admission rate is impacted by a variety of factors and fluctuates between 5% – 15%.

Admission decisions for Fall will be communicated via email beginning in February.
