Honor Societies & Clubs

French

Pi Delta Phi is the national French honor society.  Its purpose is to recognize outstanding scholarship in the French language and literatures, to increase the knowledge and appreciation of Americans for the cultural contributions of the French-speaking world, and to encourage French and francophone cultural activities.  Members also become eligible for Pi Delta Phi sponsored scholarships. Founded at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1906, Pi Delta Phi numbers more than 300 chapters established at representative public and private universities in almost every state, as well as chapters in Paris and Aix-en-Provence. Students who have completed at least one semester of upper division French (300 and above) and have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in French and 3.0 overall are eligible for membership in recognition of their academic achievement.  Normally, a call for new members is announced each semester, with an induction ceremony held at the end of the spring semester.  There is a one-time membership fee of $35; this includes a certificate and pin, and an optional honor cords to wear at graduation.   For scholarship information, go to www.pideltaphi.org/

Spanish

Sigma Delta Pi is a prestigious honor society that started in 1919 at the University of California, Berkeley, by an undergraduate student named Ruth Helen Barnes. The Society’s mission is to:

  1. To honor those who excel in the study of the Spanish language and in the study of the literature and culture of the Spanish-speaking world;
  2. To foster an understanding, appreciation and respect for the peoples, cultures and societies of the Spanish-speaking world;
  3. To honor those who have promoted and reinforced a better understanding of the contributions of the Spanish-speaking world;
  4. To serve its membership in support of the Society’s goals and ideals.

Members gain experience by organizing events as Officers (i.e. President, V.P., Secretary, etc.), promoting Hispanic Culture, speaking Spanish, and the possibility of accessing many lucrative resources (i.e. scholarships, awards, grants, and even discounts on hotels and insurance). The more Sigma Officers are involved with the UHM chapter, the more likely it will benefit them in their personal and professional lives. For more information click here.
